My initial impression of AG Riddle's style after attempting to read two books (Departure and Atlantis Gene) is that he enjoys writing these kinds of stories a lot. Soon enough you realize however, that he is not capable of delivering on the initial excitement generated in the opening chapters. For example, he isn't a pro at either setting up the scenes adequately or following through with any sort of meaningful character development. You want the plot to move and it gets stuck about halfway through each of these two works. You end up feeling used by the author for his own satisfaction in luring you in as his reader without delivering the momentum to keep you entertained and interested. It was frustrating. With both of these, I just suddenly put the books down at about the halfway point and kind of perused the remaining pages to see if I could rekindle the desire to read on.I just couldn't. So sorry for the negative review. I liked the idea of what these books promised in terms of imaginative characters, unique technologies, and future-shocking humanity into thinking about it's development as an evolving species. Instead what I found was forgettable escapism that will no doubt appeal much more to those who prefer terminator stories with abundant action and not much thought behind them. I'm left disappointed.

This was a long read but I didn't want it to end. The story was a roller coaster ride with great characters. The balance and timing was well thought out; there wasn't too much of one character or too little either and the amount of page time given each issue or flashback or character seemed just right. I never once skipped over any scenes or dialogue. I kept looking forward to getting back to the story during the day when I was occupied with other things like regular life.The premise is chilling and somewhat disturbing. I know it's only fiction, BUT... Mr. Riddle made this scenario seem completely plausible in this day and age and that is frightening. Which made this story such a riveting one.

I had just come off of back-to-back reads of Station Eleven, a well-written post-apocalyptic novel that I really enjoyed. When I read the Kindle sample of Departure, I got no clue it had any of the same themes, but I did see hints of it in the Amazon description.The Kindle sample got into the action very quickly and drew me in, which I always appreciate. The book as a whole did that to a lesser degree. It goes off on long, boring tangents about science and technology that I did not enjoy very much. In fact, because I do much of my Kindle reading at bedtime, the start of one of those tangents was a cue to me that it was time to close the Kindle and go to sleep.If you are interested in time travel, science fiction themes, multiple timelines and such, you may very much enjoy this book. I did enjoy the book, and I really enjoyed parts of it (especially the immediately post-crash portion). However, coming off of Station Eleven, it was very obvious that, while this book has its moments, the writing came off weak overall in my opinion. When reviewing a book, I find it difficult not to (even subconsciously) compare the book I just finished with the one I'm reading now. Because I focus a lot on writing skill when I'm reading, the way a book is written is weighted perhaps heavier than some other elements.If you have trouble with suspension of disbelief, this is probably not your book. While the beginning is not all THAT out of the realm of possibility, it gets really unbelievable the more it goes on. I understand this is often part and parcel of a science fiction book, but the level to which it was taken in Departure fairly boggled my mind.Finally, as I am not a fan of the romance genre, I was a bit put off by the need to wrap everything in a pretty bow with a romance. This is not something I expect from a SF novel, and it felt a little too pat and engineered.

This is an incredible stand alone novel with a horrifying catastrophe, a thrilling series of plot turns and an exciting romance.If you're a fan of dystopian post-apocalyptic novels, then this one should be at the top of your "must read" list! I love that it doesn't require a full series of books to complete, so it's a great story that you know will have some type of conclusion.The characters were surprisingly in depth considering the nature of this genre. Usually action novels focus more on plot than character development, but a decent amount of attention was placed on making you care for these characters.Riddle has created a remarkable book that had my full attention from start to finish!

Mary Roach is one of my favorite science writers and I always buy her books and read them when they first come out.This book - Gulp - is all about the alimentary canal; that part of the body that begins at the point where food is consumed and ends where solid waste is expelled. Starting with taste and the mouth, she follows our digestive system all the way down. As with her other books, this one is replete with interesting and often bizarre facts and tales of eccentrics and misguided scientists and experiments gone awry. The author covers all sorts of "taboo" and sensitive subjects and both educates us and makes us laugh.At the start, we learn about the importance of our nose (our ability to smell) and what that has to do with taste. She also compares our tastebuds with those of cats and dogs - showing how we often assume that they will like what we will. Well, it turns out that's really wrong. We learn how different cultures throughout history have found different things palatable and that the foods consumed by the most privileged may not be the healthiest. She also goes on later on to compare the anatomy of man to those of various other animals and points out how we are the same and how we differ. We learn about the problems and benefits associated with our digestive system and the various theories and treatments over time for various intestinal ailments.In typical Mary Roach style, she candidly discusses such "taboo" topics as intestinal gas and our bowel habits. We read about the dangers of prisoners secreting contraband in their stomachs or their anal cavities and go from there to learning about the digestive systems of competitive eaters. We learn about the importance of saliva, all about acid reflux, and the various problems associated with indigestion among many, many other topics. We even learn why Elvis died, and yes it was on the toilet. We even hear a theory why people believed in dragons; and yes it has to do reptiles with gas and combustion. We find out why we don't digest our own stomachs (well, while we're alive) and whether or not animals other than parasites can survive being swallowed and even forcibly make their way out.It's difficult to give a fair summary to this book because it covers so much. This may be favorite book of hers since Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and like that book this book will literally have you laughing out loud. For example, in trying to avoid the embarrassment of releasing intestinal gas, she writes:"Or perhaps to take the advice of a gastroenterologist I know: get a dog. (To blame.)"As a person who has GERD (acid reflux) and has spent time in the hospital for an episode of intestinal blockage (worst pain, ever), I was especially interested in this topic. But I think it's really something that would interest everyone. You will learn a lot and you will laugh a lot and you will end up wanting to make friends with this author because she is so amusing and so personable.Highly recommended. You just have to read the first few pages to see if this is something you would enjoy. I read this in one sitting; it was not only entertaining but I'm smarter for having read it.

When I worked at Frontier Communications (like working at Intel), I would eat lunch, then read for 30 or so minutes.This is a book that doesn’t really work as a post-prandial tome. Even though I can watch the DiscoveryLife channel while eating, Gulp brought me to the edge.It’s not that the book is badly written, but the author discusses subjects that aren’t usually the subject of medical tomes (spit) to a scientific discussion of feces. As I said, this was not the best choice of book to read after lunch.Despite having said that, this was a fantastic book, taking the reader on a trip through the alimentary canal from mouth to food’s final disposition.Highly recommended for those who are interested to what happens to that steak once you swallow it. I would suggest that you not read this before or after you eat. You’ll thank me later.4.8 out of 5

This was an interesting reading experience. The author has a knack for infusing humor into her writing, she grossed me out a little but also made me laugh.I never knew people taste tested pet food, why would they anyway? She also discusses the taboos behind eating certain foods. There is an entire chapter on saliva and one on William Beaumont and Alexis St. Martin and his experiments. The author introduces you to all kinds of strange experiments as different scientists discuss and examine the digestive tract. There is a chapter on constipation and how it can kill you.I need to be brave a grab a copy of Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers.

What can I say more than what has already been said very well in so many good reviews already on this site? I suggest that you read both Amazon’s “most helpful positive review” and the “most helpful negative review” and then try to determine which one seems to speak to your individual situation and mindset. You see, both are right. Yes, this book has great strengths and great weaknesses depending on what you expected and wanted to get out of it…and what previous knowledge you already had to bring to this topic.In my case, this book was used the basic textbook for an eight-week discussion group studying microbes and the human gut. We were a dozen or so very bright seniors, all retired from a variety of successful professional careers. The “class” was affiliated with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) where we organize group discussions and presentations around a strong peer-learning concept. Before each class session, we read one or two chapters from this book and then had discussion based on questions prepared by one or two of our members about those chapters. In addition, we listened to, and discussed, one or two presentations prepared by members. All the presentations dealt with topics related to our human microbiome, especially those microbes in the alimentary canal. Our OLLI has found that this is a good format for casual academic group learning, especially in an environment where almost everyone already has an advanced degree. Basically, we rely on learning through individual reading and research, and enhance that learning by sharing it with our peers.Our class had a lot of problems using this book as the central discussion text to support the class. There was just not enough substance within each chapter for adequate discussion questions. Sure the book was fun to read, but it didn’t leave the group with much to discuss.If you’re interested in this topic and enjoy humorous light books covering scientific topics, then this may be exactly what you’re looking for; but, if you want more in- depth knowledge on this topic, I suggest you look elsewhere.

For the most part, this looks like a standard investment text. The major topics for a course on investments is covered. To be fair, any investment text you get from the past decade or two will likely have most of the same major topics. It is well-written and well-organized, which is helpful.In my opinion, there are two areas that this text adds value. First, the discussion on technical analysis is very good. Second, since this book has a 2011 copyright, some of the data is updated relative to older texts. This latter is my main reason for getting new finance texts.Therefore, if you are a finance newbie, you will benefit from this text. However, for intermediate or advanced finance students, you will likely have read other texts that cover pretty much the same topics. In my opinion, unless those texts are old (i.e., the data and research presented are dated), you likely don't need to consider getting this text or any other text on investments for that matter.

It's just a hard read.

All "popular" investment books take one idea (that could be explained on one page) and blow it out to fill the whole book endlessly repeating themselves. In this book, I have learned something new almost on every page.
